Rebirth of a Nation
From: In Our Own Aboriginal Voice
A poem about the strength of Indigenous women.
Mary-Ann Chevrier also known as Mae, was born on the northern end of Vancouver Island into the Guskimukw nation. While working fulltime, being a single mom, and designing clothing, she is an avid writer. “Rebirth of a Nation” was written as a mood description for Mae’s final collection and as a personal statement before graduating from fashion design school in Vancouver. Writing is what Mae does to get in touch with her spiritual and emotional being, which allows her to be able to tend to her daughter, work two jobs, and maintain a healthy home.
