About Canadian CourseReadings
Who are we and what do we do?
Canadian CourseReadings is a non-profit consortium of Canadian academic publishing houses. We are encouraging all Canadian publishers to use this platform to provide you access to their books in chapter form. We are a registered non-profit corporation as Canadian Publishers Hosted Software Solutions.
Canadian CourseReadings is a new online resource for university and college faculty. Our mission: to help faculty discover and select relevant new titles and course readings in the humanities and social sciences from the books published by Canadian academic and university presses.
How does our service work?
We’re offering a new way to browse, discover and select reading materials to use in your courses. You can choose as many readings as you want from any book in our collection. The site is free to use.
Campus bookstores can order the course readings you compile either in digital or printed form. They can be ordered as a stand-alone volume, printed in paperback format. They can also be ordered as part of a larger collection of readings from your university or college’s coursepack supplier. The cost of purchasing our content averages about 10 cents a page.
If your campus store orders printed copies of your course readings from us, printing adds 5 cents a page to the final cost of the printed volume. Add on your bookstore’s normal mark-up, and you’ll find that the final bookstore price to students using this approach is competitive with the prices now being charged by publishers for course readings and textbooks. Often, our option is cheaper.
The price you see on each reading is set by the publisher, and payment is for use of that reading in a collection of course readings. The price includes use of the original book’s typesetting and full copyright clearance. Open-source readings published by our participating publishers are priced at zero.
Revenues received from the sale of readings on this site are paid to the publisher of the readings, and authors will receive a royalty on every copy sold. A portion of the sale covers the cost of administering this site.
If you know of a book from one of our participating publishers which is not on the site, please let us know and we will request it from the publisher.
If there are titles from Canadian publishers whose books are not on the site that you would be interested in, please let us know. We will touch base with that publisher about joining our initiative.
Send us a course description! We’re happy to dig through our collections for you.
