In settings ranging from Newfoundland fishing outports to small towns in Northern Ontario, the authors of these stories explore themes such as coming of age, the changing role of women in society, and the role of religion in small rural communities.   • Climate Change in Canadian Poetry and Short Fiction

    The poems and short stories in this collection explore the anxiety and confusion brought on by the threat of climate change.  Themes explored in these readings include our relationship with wildlife and the natural world, how we adapt to our changing world, and the struggle of balancing the joy of parenthood with the anxiety of the prospect of being a parent in a changing world.   • Death and Dying in Canadian Short Fiction and Poetry

    The poems and short stories in this collection explore the themes of death and dying from a variety of perspectives. Themes include coping with the death of a parent as in Shut up You’re Pretty and On Not Losing my Father’s Ashes in the Flood, how a community copes with the loss of a member, the role of the eulogy in The Last Word and the death of everyone and everything as in Has the World Ended Yet.     The authors of the readings in this collection express their experiences with disability through their poetry, short, fiction, and artwork.   • Immigration in Canadian Short Fiction and Poetry

    Readings in this collection explore the Canadian immigrant experience from a variety of perspectives. In Things are Good Now, Djamila Ibrahim tells the stories of immigrants before, during and after their moves to new homes in new countries and the struggles they face in building and maintaining relationships in new surroundings. In We are Not Pakistan, Shauna Singh Baldwin tells ten deeply human stories of individuals facing unique challenges across Canada and around the world. And in We Two Alone, Jack Wang charts the lives of Chinese immigrants to Canada from the 1920s to the present. More readings will be added to this collection in the future.
