Charla Lewis

One still summer day, Charla was visiting her late grandmother’s burial site in Swxwúmesh; she was overcome with grief and guilt because for so long she hadn’t understood her grandmother’s ways. It wasn’t until later that she came to understand how strong she was for surviving, day by day, in a world that didn’t recognize her pain. As she knelt at her grandmother’s burial site, a warm breeze wrapped itself around her, enveloping her; all grief and guilt seemed to melt from her. “It was my grandmother, I am certain of that—my spirit recognized her. I hope to honour her in these poems.”
