Ilga Leja(she/her) was born in Germany, the daughter of Latvian parents displaced by the Second World War. She grew up in the Baltic commu-nity of Corner Brook. A former librarian, she has worked primarily in gov-ernment and academic libraries in Ontario and Nova Scotia. A graduate of Dalhousie University and Memorial University of Newfoundland, she has more recently turned her attention to conducting research relating to the Newfoundland Baltic community. This has included collecting oral histories and original documents from some of the Latvians and Baltic Germans who were among the first to arrive in Newfoundland. Currently working as a textile artist and knitwear designer, she manages an online knitting design business at ilgaleja.com. She lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
