Susan Rose

Susan Rose(she/her) worked as a Special Education teacher in St. John’s from 1985 to 2006, teaching students from grades four to twelve. In 1992 she began to lobby government for 2slgbtqi rights in the education system. Since 2006 she has been volunteering her time consulting and guiding students and their families when their school and community are not safe places for them. She has served as President, and is currently Vice President, of Egale Canada. In 2017 she received the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award for her work in education. In 2019 she received the Memorial Alumni Tribute Award for Outstanding Community Service. In January 2020, she was invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for her work in education and human rights. Most recently, in April 2021 she received the Patricia Cowan Award from her peers, the NLTA, for Support and Promotion of Education. In addition to her human rights work she owns and operates a tourism business, Coastal Cottages, where she enjoys her summers hiking, mountain biking, and birdwatching along the coast.
